Our vow renewal story

 

We spent the evening watching the sunset through the mountains surrounding Lake Cresent in Washington. We are a bunch of midwesterners who were able to meet in one of our favorite places. Olympic National Park. John + Liz actually came all the way out to Washington because Tristan + I renewed our vows this summer. We’ve been married for 3 years as of September 16th, and we are such incredibly different people since we got married back in 2017. We’ve gotten some comments, some good, and some bad. People thinking we’re way too young to renew our vows, and some making comments how it’s only for after 10 years. And I want to break that stereotype. Because every morning you wake up you have to recommit your life to your partner. Every. Morning. This was just an outward expression of that.

For those that don’t know our story, we got married young. I (Madi) was 19 and Tristan was 21, and it’s brought its joys and challenges. We’ve grown into different people since we’ve been together, we’ve been trying to learn ourselves while also trying to learn about a whole other human. It’s crazy! Our marriage isn’t perfect, and will never be, but we’re putting in the work to make it happen. That’s why when we originally talked about renewing our vows I knew it had to be something that was crazy. Our love isn’t polished, and it’s messy a lot. We’ve honestly been going full force since we got married. We’ve lived in 3 different apartments, got our pup Tucker, moved into a camper, started a business, went full time in it, experienced heartbreak, and made lifelong friends and so much more.

I knew John + Liz were the people to capture our vow renewal. I’d met them at a wedding we shot together, and I had always kept contact with Liz after. We hosted a workshop called Field + Pine together in Kansas City this year, and she gets me. So when it came to hiring photo + video for our vow renewal, it was a no-brainer.
